Odisha second in country in horticultural nursery accreditation

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has  come  up  to Second  position in the  country for  developing  62 accredited  horticultural  nurseries following  Karnataka  which  has  65 numbers  to  its  credit. 

This has come to light in Executive Committee  Meeting of Odisha Horticulture Development Society held under Chairmanship of Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik in  Secretariat Conference hall today.  Presenting  the proposals for  approval of the Committee,  Horticulture  Director Sanjeeb  Chadha mentioned that  target has been set to develop another 100 nurseries   during   current   year,   which   after   successful  completion  is  expected  to take Odisha to number  one  position in  the country.  

Reviewing the  project  proposals  Chief  Secretary Patnaik  has  directed the  Department  to  make  robust  buy-back  arrangements  for  all  Horticultural products that are  promoted through  National  Horticultural  Mission. Sri  Patnaik  has  also  asked  to  them  to promote  river-bed  potato cultivation in large patches  as  this  product  is more  hygienic  and  disease  free.  The department  has  been  directed  to  promote  mechanization  of  horticultural  operations  by  providing  necessary training  and  equipments  to  youths  so  that  they  can  get  permanent  livelihood  and  the  horticultural  operations can  be  boosted  up  with  minimum  cost  involvement. 

The  committee  approved  10 numbers of Cool Chambers  with each  with 10 MT  capacity  for Kandhamal, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada & Keonjhar with estimated cost of Rs.11.70 lakh each. Similarly, 23 numbers of  Rural Aggregation centers & Functional Infrastructure have been approved  for  Kandhamal, Koraput,  Nabarangpur,  Rayagada  districts with cost involvement of Rs.25 lakh each. 

A  Bio-Tech  tissue culture lab involving  investment  of  Rs.91.00 lakh has been approved for Nimapara. 8 numbers of mushroom spawn production units with total investment  of  Rs.110.00 lakh  have  been  approved  for Ganjam,  Dhenkanal, Cuttack,  Sambalpur  and  Khurda.  4 numbers of Cashew Processing Units with investment of Rs.127.00 lakhs have been approved for Ganjam,  Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj. 91 number of Onion storage structures of 25 MT capacity  with  investment of  Rs.91.00 lakhs  have  been  approved  for  Kalahandi, Bolangir,  Puri,  Sonepur and  Bargarh. Bio-Control Labs with  investment  of  Rs.152.00 lakhs  have  been approved  to  be  set  up  in Balasore  and  Ganjam.  Review of  the  progress  of  National   Horticulture  Activities  for  2012-13  reveals  that  a total  amount  of  around  Rs.80.00 Crores received from both the Central and State Government has been fully utilized for rejuvenation activities  over  1,100 Hectors, spices cultivation   in 3,000 Hectors  establishment of Plastic mulching  in 3085 Hectors, Creation of 3200  water bodies, protected cultivation in 1.185 Lakhs square  meters,  maintenance  of  organic  farming  in  2005 Hectors, bee-keeping in 16,050 units,  supply  of 804 machines  for  horticultural  operation,  development  of 1303 post  harvest management  units and development  of  4 number  of  marketing  units.  Similarly  under  National Mission on Micro  Irrigation  around  Rs.29.00 Crores  received  from  both  State  and  Central  Government   has  been  fully  utilized   in  irrigating 1585 Hectors  through  deep irrigation,  4.9 Hectors  through Mini sprinkler, 2.62 Hectors through Micro sprinkler and  17990 Hectors  through Portable sprinkler  and  22 hectors  through Large  Volume   sprinkler.  

Annual Action Plan  of Rs.90.00 Crores  has  been  approved  for  2013-14. Protected cultivation, post  harvest  management, horticulture mechanization, creation marketing infrastructure, promotion of  organic  cultivation  and  creation  of  water  bodies  have  been the thrust  areas of Action  Plan  for 2013-14. Chief Secretary  has  directed  that  after setting up different infrastructures lease those out to farmer groups or user groups for running and maintenance. The user charges collected  should  be  kept  in a separate fund  and  be utilized for  maintenance of the project.   

Principal Secretary Agriculture Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, Director Agriculture, R.S. Gopalan along  with  senior  officers  from  Horticulture  and  Agriculture Department participated  in the discussions.
