New Delhi: In a joint statement, Royal National Institute of Blind People (UK), BarrierBreak Technologies and National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), today announced that Techshare India 2010, will be held in New Delhi on 15th and 16th February, 2010 at the India Habitat Centre. Techshare is Europe's biggest technology event to promote assistive technology for people with disabilities.
The only activity of its kind in India, Techshare India 2010 will highlight the importance of implementing accessibility standards and complying to different accessibilities law. In addition, Techshare India 2010 will also exhibit and showcase IT products and services that will allow visitors to browse through the latest in assistive technologies for people with disabilities. The exhibition will showcase the role of technology in the lives of people with disabilities. In addition, web accessibility, software accessibility and accessibility on the move for mobiles and PDAs will be displayed.
One of the highlights of the event will be an experiential lab where visitors can get a first hand feel of what it is to have a disability and the role that assistive technology can play in the life of people with disabilities.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Shilpi Kapoor, Managing Director, BarrierBreak Technologies, said "Techshare India 2010 will offer workshops and presentations on accessibility and draw upon the wisdom of people who have tremendous experience in the field. It will also bring awareness about various accessible technologies available in market for the people with disabilities." "Today technology is playing a vital role in the life of people and has become a necessity but unfortunately it is equally not accessible to all – especially to people with disabilities," she added.
"Techshare is a series of conferences across the regions of the world to bring together professionals, experts, industry and governments alongside people with disabilities to find solutions to making TV, phones, computers etc, usable by people with disabilities" added Mr. Kevin Carey, Chair, Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).
Mr. Javed Abidi, Director, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) expressed his sentiments on the subject and said, "We are happy to have partnered with BarrierBreak Technologies. Techshare will help create knowledge that is sorely missing in India. Between Techshare 2008 and this one, there has been some discourse on Web Accessibility. However, the critical issue of User Interface is yet to be flagged!". "If even 10% of what we are going to propose at the conference is implemented, millions of disabled people will benefit," he added.
The two day exhibition and conference will witness participation from more than 500 delegates from government and non-profit organizations, educational institutes and corporate sectors from across the globe; where more than 50 speakers will address the issues related to accessibility standards and law. The exhibition will have more than 40 stalls that will display different IT hardware and software products and services for people with disabilities.
Some of the key speakers at the conference will be Mr. Kiran Kaja, Digital Accessibility Development Officer, Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB); Dr. Om Deshmukh, Research Scientist, IBM India Pvt Ltd; Mr. Subramanyan Murali, Tech Lead, Yahoo! Audience Platforms, Yahoo Software Development India Pvt.
