Katra: Dr. Ravi Dhar, Consultant, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Programme (BIRAP), Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi; visited the School of Biotechnology, SMVD University on 6th May 2011 in connection with discussions to formulate IPR policy for the university. This policy when formulated will help the faculty & research scholars to file patents on the data generated in various research projects of the university. Later he delivered a guest lecture on the topic "IPR & Technology Transfer" at Lecture Theater 'A', SBT. Prof. V. Verma, Director, School of Biotechnology & Dean, College of Sciences extended a warm welcome with a brief introduction of the speaker. The lecture was attended by faculty members of SBT, members of Patent Facilitation Cell Committee, research scholars and students of the School of Biotechnol ogy. In his lecture Dr. Dhar discussed in detail the various types of Intellectual Property Rights of scientific research and the various procedures of filing a patent in India for Transfer of Technology. He debated on the need for scientists and researchers to decide whether to go in for a publication versus a patent. He elucidated the need for proper documentation and negotiation while filing a patent. He also elaborated the role of Public Private Partnerships, Contract Research Services and the conduct of SWOT analysis. Earlier in the day Dr. Dhar had detailed discussions with Prof. R.N.K. Bamezai, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, SMVDU about various issues pertaining to filing of patents & development of IPR policy for the university.
