By Pradipta Kumar Pal The new policy of the central government to do away with the 10th Board exams and introducing the grading system is a fine step in the right direction. Many People, in general feel that education and exams are correlated and one doesn't exist without the other. It might be true but it never makes any sense when I see children skipping meals and avoiding games and sports to mug up all they could before a forth coming exam. Thank God for the new education policy that will now remove the burden of the shoulders of our children. Some people criticize that the new gradation system does not meet the mark of standard education. But, is it only marks that provide proper assessment of the skill and talent in children? Don't exams create extra burden on students? Don't exam force students to do late nights and wake up before 4 am to score good percentage. More than exams the percentage calculations have made life even more miserable for students. They are forced to get every single sentence by heart to bring high percentage but in the mean while most students forget to see a game field for months. Class tenth students are not even expected to sit before the TV to view a match or a program. Most students use to detach themselves from their social circle. Any body can recognize a 10th STD student by the dark circles under his/her eyes, the drowsy feeling his/ her face exhibits. The pressure is simply too much and it ensured only text book learning. The activities at the end of the books simply remained untouched. Sure the system of percentage marking guaranteed a lot of things written on paper but it never made students capable to adjust with real life situation and applications. But now finally teachers would not be forcing children to read remember and write some facts on paper. They can peacefully encourage students to learn and see beyond the textbooks. Students are now going to find out a better routine to study along with their hobbies and having entertainment. Now students don't have to suffer from low esteem and inferiority complex as they find many people in the same category. Due to gradation facilities and the option to appear in the Board exam students can enjoy their day to day life, overcome stress and depression, make contacts with friend and family and read their favorite story books and magazines without confining themselves to the text books only. Our education system should focus more on knowledge and less on marks. It should help to have complete personality development. It must allow the children to explore the world and to come with their own originality in order to help them more in the course of life. It is more important for the teacher to teach the students the lessons of life rather than the lessons in their textbooks. Sometimes our so- called Gurus make the care-free life of children more missing and miserable by nagging them frequently with so many dos and don'ts. Without a formal and burdensome board exam now I think children can have some peace and rest. True, the new system of gradation and the option to choose to appear or not in the board exams will give more power in the hands of teachers and school authorities but at the same time teachers must be equal, indiscriminate and rational while judging the talent and capabilities of their students. Teachers should find out means and methods to make learning through activities and fun. Learning should be connected to life and be more meaningful. This will make our children more knowledgeable, intelligent and self dependent. Learning through activities, discovery and exploration in a child friendly and child centered manner will help the students a lot. Yes the new education policy will open bright opportunities of learning. Having said about all these Education policies in the Central board when we put eyes on the scenario of Orissa it feels as if being in a different land altogether. Some urgent and students friendly steps should be taken so that the system of education improves. In our system in Orissa the academic session starts from June or July where as in other CBSE schools it starts from April. So it doesn't cover the whole year. Those might affect the studious mentality of students. The session should start from April and end at March thus maintaining the equilibrium in the amount of studies in each time period. The infrastructures of our schools are very poor, often without proper facilities of sanitation and drinking water. Students do not have access to library books and laboratory activities. Thus the experimental side of education is seriously hampered. Our state board must take steps as to renovate existing infrastructure. The staffs in state boards are not as qualified as the staff in central school. Their pay is also very low due to which they lose interest imparting education. They try to broaden their sources of income by other additional jobs due to which they don't take classes regularly. Many schools do not have proper teachers in the faculties of Mathematics, Science and English. So students are mostly dependent on tuitions. But those who cannot afford that are usually left behind and that is most probably the main reason why students fail. And our pass percentage is quite low. Many a times the syllabus is not updated for years together and hence our knowledge lags behind compared to CBSE schools. This aspect must not be ignored by the State Board. Along with all this, during the exams there are a lot of difficulties faced by the state board students. The time limit is only 2 and half an hours which is 30 minutes short than what CBSE students get. So they are not able to showcase their best results as they are always in a hurry. There is no gap between two subjects during board exams except for the official holidays where as CBSE students get 3-4 or even 7-8 days gap for revision. So in a sense students of orissa board don't have enough time studying the entire course thoroughly once again. Thus there should be more gaps in between two subjects. Students have also tension in going to exam centers which is far away from their home. In my view it would be better to shift the teachers instead of students during board exams so that they would feel normal and give exams without exertion of extra pressure. The exams must be corruption free and hence give more space to students. Along with all this the evaluation of answer sheets need to be more lenient and proper because their strictness forbids the growth of our students. Last and not the least proper steps must be taken to improve the English speaking skills and communication skills of the students. Adding to that ICT based teaching should be imparted to our oriya medium students so that they can face the challenges of the future. Thus a more renovated education policy is the need of the hour in orissa.
